Welcome to the parent lab - Episode 071

Dear Parent of a Child that Struggles at School,

If you have found your way here, you might be tired of grasping at ways to help your child be successful at school. Maybe last night you said the words, “Fine. I have no choice but to let you fail.”  But that’s not completely true because you are here, looking for answers.

Parenting a struggling student can be isolating. In my experience as an academic coach, I have found two reasons for this:

1) The word struggle is unique for each family.  Struggle can be a gifted student facing failure and perfectionism. Struggle might be a student who refuses to do work in class. Struggle might be a child who completes work at home but forgets to turn it in. When we reach out for help, no one has the one solution we need.

2)  If our child struggles at school, it means we are failing as a parent. Who wants to admit that? Yet we carry that fear in every discussion about school.

However, through my years of working with families as an academic coach, I know one thing is certain. If your child struggles at school, you are a not a failure.

The parents I speak to are amazing. They want a positive relationship with their kiddo. They recognize their unique talents. They are desperately trying to keep the relationship with their child intact despite the challenges at school. These parents don’t want perfection from their children, they want to offer support and guide them through this rocky period. However, their concern is not translating into their child’s language.  And right now, the struggles they're seeing are interfering with how they interact with their child. They have to walk on eggshells when they ask about the school day because they might get snapped at for being too intrusive. Parents are stuck figuring out how to help their child when they are struggling at school without the snark and nasty looks.

Enter The Parent Lab

And that's why I started The Parent Lab. The Parent Lab is the ultimate support group for parents to keep your relationship and sanity intact while you raise a confident student.  The Parent Lab is a place for you to find resources and strategies to help your child succeed in school and build your relationship even when school gets tough.

I firmly believe that when your child struggles at school, what is really key is maintaining your relationship with them, that we approach it with a team mentality. However, parents need support too. You need a safe space to share your experiences and learn from other parents who have been there and survived that.

The Parent Lab will  help you and your kiddo, get back on the same team and tackle school together without a referee.

Marni Pasch| Host of School Counselor Gone Rogue| Academic Coach | Team Pasch Academic Coaching

I work with students in grades 6th and higher, who struggle with academic confidence and motivation. I help them survive school with less stress by helping them create concrete goals, tackle procrastination and learn creative study techniques. I empower students to take charge of their education and reach their goals. I do this through individual or group coaching so students achieve success in life, school, career readiness and their social endeavors. I provided in person academic coaching in Orlando, FL, but work with students across the country through Zoom!
