Help your Teen Handle Critiques, Criticism and how to Tell the Difference - Episode 077
Do your kids always take your criticism or critique well? How do you help them accept critique as a positive thing rather than an attack on their person?
Usually, the difference between critique and criticism is so invisible that we sometimes interchange them. Knowing the difference will help you teach your child how to address comments as suggestions which can help them become better versions of themselves.
I have faced my own critiques (and criticisms) about my use of the word “kiddo” in my writing and on the show. Learning how to handle constructive feedback is something we don’t age out of - but how can we deliver it with a dash of positivity? That’s why my choice of this week’s topic is looking at criticism on School Counselor Gone Rogue, and we look at:
What makes a critique different from criticism?
How can you help your child understand that critiques are meant to help them become better?
Feelings, Criticism, and Critique
I work with a lot of tweens and teenagers and referring to them as ‘children’ makes me feel oogey—like they can’t give anything higher than what a child is capable of.
I don’t want these students to feel like I have a broader view of life because of my age. So my use of ‘kiddo’ sounds more respectful than “child.” Of course, maybe being called a baby goat is an insult...but baby goat yoga is in right now!
However, I chose to become more aware of my usage of this word and how it makes other people feel. For me, this is a critique and this is how I handle such comments.
What do you think? How do you deal with criticisms and critique? I’d love to hear from you.
