Why Students Struggle with Email Writing and Self-Advocacy - Episode 082

As the Corona virus forces students to switch to distance learning and parents to home school teachers, email skills are crucial.

Email writing is a great way for students to advocate for themselves. Yet, students from grade six to college level struggle with it. Writing emails is scary for most kiddos and a lot of parents don’t know why.

In this episode of School Counselor Gone Rogue, we’ll be looking at some of the problems kids have with writing emails. These include:

·         The fear or making mistakes

·         Not wanting to bother teachers

·         Doubts about whether or not they’ll receive a feedback

Children, like many adults, don’t know how to start emails. Should it be a “Dear …” or “Hello …”? Interestingly too, some kids are gracious enough to not want to bother their teachers.

The truth is, you may not know that your child struggles with writing emails. And if you’re unaware, there’s almost no way they could get the help they need. This podcast focuses on helping kids advocate for themselves through the art of email writing.

I’ve put together a short course for students about writing emails – The Awesome Students Guide to Email Writing. This course helps students discover the pet peeves of most teachers and provides templates that’ll guide them on email writing best practices.

You can access the course here.

I work with students in grades 6th and higher, who struggle with academic confidence and motivation. I help them survive school with less stress by helping them create concrete goals, tackle procrastination and learn creative study techniques. I empower students to take charge of their education and reach their goals. I do this through individual or group coaching so students achieve success in life, school, career readiness and their social endeavors. I provided in person academic coaching in Orlando, FL, but work with students across the country through Zoom!
