Celebrating School Counselor Week- Episode 073

School counselors help kids navigate the academic world so that they can lead awesome lives later on. Having attended a school without a school counselor, I see how much I lacked in terms of support. I was lost and under-performing.

What role does your child’s school counselor play at their school? Are they being used to their best ability? Some schools don’t have counselors in elementary schools. Others have one counselor functioning in four different schools. The American School Counselor Association asks for a ratio of 250:1 unfortunately, that recommendation is rarely met by schools with many school counselors having a case load of 350:1 even 1000:1.

If school counseling was part of a student’s life from the beginning, maybe we’d have fewer problems with graduation rates and emotional stress among students.

School counselors are the best people your child can confide in when they have issues with their education. They are positioned to guide and help your child get the services they need and build confidence for the next 12 years.

The theme of this year’s National School Counseling Week is “helping build better humans”. If I had a school counselor growing up, my sign of support would read “my school counselor helped me be better by simply believing I’m good”. And this is really all many students need today.

It’s true that people in the helping profession don’t necessarily receive thanks and praise. It’s in their nature to give. I believe a school counselor would have made all the difference in my time. I would have had help with so many things. In this episode I wanted to give a personal thank you to the school counselors fighting the good fight!

I never had a school counselor at my school, and because of that I know exactly what I would say to them this week during National School Counselor Week. This week, I share my thank you to all the school counselors who are fighting the good fight!…

Parents, find out what the responsibilities of your child’s school counselor are. If your child is in elementary school, is there a school counselor there? Why does our system wait till students are in high school before they get to have a school counselor? Why don’t we start at the beginning?

School counselors are not placed in schools to only give your child the worst possible lunch hour. They have appropriate duties including goal setting, short term counseling for students, referral for long term support, and more.

Overall, school counselors are giving back so much, and I say “thank you. Everything you’re doing will make a huge difference in one of your students’ lives”.

As you advocate for your roles this week, I say “thank you for all that you do because I realize how desperately it’s needed.” Parents, you could reach out to your child’s school counselor and say thanks.

In this week’s podcast on School Counselor Gone Rogue, you’ll learn the following:

·         What contributions does your child’s school counselor make?

·         How school counselors advocate for their field

·         Why “thank you” is the best way to celebrate school counselors.

I work with students in grades 6th and higher, who struggle with academic confidence and motivation. I help them survive school with less stress by helping them create concrete goals, tackle procrastination and learn creative study techniques. I empower students to take charge of their education and reach their goals. I do this through individual or group coaching so students achieve success in life, school, career readiness and their social endeavors. I provided in person academic coaching in Orlando, FL, but work with students across the country through Zoom!
