How to Have Successful Parent-Teacher Conferences - Episode 075

How can parents prepare for parent-teacher conferences? What if you are expecting the meeting with the teachers to go poorly? Parent-teacher conferences can be scary events to attend especially when your child isn’t rocking it in every area.

But how can you learn to attend them with the right mind and attitude? It’s enough to know that your child isn’t doing great. But having to hear it all over again can be perceived as rude and daunting.

From my experience and interaction with parents in The Parent Lab, many parents go in unprepared with the right questions.

Having successful parent-teacher conferences is really about doing your due diligence before the meeting. Go with all your records of emails with teachers (whether or not you got feedback).

Apart from this, ensure that you’ve been assessing your child’s grades using the online gradebooks. This allows you to respond to comments about your child’s performance with the necessary information.

Also, you should ensure that the teachers, who take the subjects your child is struggling with, are present at the meeting. If they’re there, you both can come up with a solution to help your teen, tween or child.

More importantly, attend the meeting in “team” mode not “combat” mode. Teachers may not always present your child’s struggles in the right words.

If you’re ready to make things work, you’ll come out feeling better. What do you think? I’d like to hear from you.

In this episode of School Teacher Gone Rogue podcasts, we talk about:

·         Ways to achieve successful parent-teacher conferences

I work with students in grades 6th and higher, who struggle with academic confidence and motivation. I help them survive school with less stress by helping them create concrete goals, tackle procrastination and learn creative study techniques. I empower students to take charge of their education and reach their goals. I do this through individual or group coaching so students achieve success in life, school, career readiness and their social endeavors. I provided in person academic coaching in Orlando, FL, but work with students across the country through Zoom!
